Command Sgt. Maj. Jay C. Bennett

A-TAG Command Sergeant Major

Command Sergeant Major Bennett was born in St. Clair, Michigan and enlisted in the United States Army on March 26, 1984. He served for four years active duty as a Light Wheel Vehicle Mechanic stationed at Fort Hood, Texas. He immediately enlisted in the Michigan National Guard after serving Active Duty in August 1988 with the HHC, 1st Battalion, 225th Infantry, out of Detroit, MI.
CSM Bennett has held various Soldier and leadership positions throughout his military career including Light Wheel Vehicle Mechanic, Truck Driver, Infantry Soldier, Squad Leader, Section Chief, Platoon Sergeant, First Sergeant, and Battalion and Brigade Command Sergeant Major. From September 1990-July 1991, he mobilized with the 1461st Transportation Company as a Truck Driver in support of Operation Desert Shield and Desert Storm, he deployed to Guantanamo Bay January- October 2004 as a member of the Joint Task Force, and left for a third deployment from September 2010- September 2011 to Kuwait in support of Operation New Dawn, Iraq. Upon return from deployment, CSM Bennett served as First Sergeant until February 2012. He served as the Battalion Command Sergeant Major of HHB, 1-119th FA from February 2012- December 2016, then transferred to the 272nd Regional Support Group as the Command Sergeant Major, most recently he served as the Command Sergeant Major of the 177th Regional Training Institute out of Augusta, Michigan.
CSM Bennett and his wife of 27 years, Carrie Bennett, have two children: Jay, Jr. and Brooke.
